The determination of measurement uncertainty always plays an important role in methods derived from mathematical statistics are described in detail in relevant tandards and guidelines as well as in technical literature.

In practice, however, it is often necessary to take account of special engineering features and constraints which are generally not covered by applicable rules and standards. In many cases, therefore, (subjective) assumptions have to be made which require both sufficient theoretical knowledge and practical experience on the part of the respective plant personnel.

The present VGB-Standard aims to provide suggestions, references and recommendations for dealing with this problem and to help achieve sufficiently precise results in determining measurement uncertainty with comparatively small mathematical effort.

The examples used for illustration refer mainly to the determination of thermodynamic basic variables, namely pressure and temperature. Based on this, special features of grid measurements and the proper practical treatment of correlating measurements are dealt with. Furthermore, the topics of mass flow measurement and electrical power measurement are also addressed.
